....or, the I-lophone for short.

This is almost self-explanatory:

an immense xylophone made out of various sizes and lengths of industrial I-beams.

Of course, these would have to be rolled beams and not welded.

The lower notes would be the huge beams used to support bridges.

The instrument would be played with a keyboard, and the beams would be struck with steam hammers.

I guess you could also set up a system where you "waldo" the hits with an actual xylophone or marimbas electronically connected to the hammers, to mimic on a large scale what you are playing on a small scale.

Better wear earphones unless you're a mile away....
