Why would anyone want to write?

First, perhaps, is that "the writer" is someone who is adulated, like astronauts, FBI agents, and rock stars. The writer has been romanticized throughout history. I picture an aged man sitting in a dark attic late at night with a candle or kerosene lamp, dipping his quill into a little cup of ink, and freezing his fingers off. And there are those devoted individuals in prisons who write their memoirs in blood. Not to mention the possibility of riches and fame, no matter how small. But perhaps most importantly is mapping out the text you are going to lay down, rearranging the words, tweaking sentences, and getting them just right. Most of us, even those who cannot write, or are poor writers, know there is great satisfaction in that.
