Interview with Billy Childs prior to performance at SOPAC, June, 2013

Get the Led Out is more than just a “cover band” or “impersonator act.”

They are a Philadelphia-based group of established professional musicians who strive to bring the legendary recordings of Led Zeppelin live to the stage. In fact, they are so serious about putting musicianship first, lead vocalist, Paul Sinclair, declined dying his dark hair blonde in order to take on the role of Robert Plant.

Sinclair and long-time friend/guitarist Paul Hammond, who plays electric and acoustic guitars as well as mandolin with Get the Led Out, have released two hard rock albums with their group Sinclair and have performed many high profile shows with noted acts such as Foghat, Zebra and David Ruffin of the Temptations.

Jimmy Marchiano plays electric and acoustic guitars in the band, and does vocals, and has played with Tangier and Blackeyed Susan. Bassist Billy Childs is best known for his work as founding member of 1980s rock band Britny Fox. Drummer/percussionist Adam Ferraioli, also played in Britny Fox and Tangier. And Andrew Lipke, on keyboards, electric and acoustic guitars, vocals and percussion became associated with Get the Led Out as a result of his studio work on Philadelphia artist Kate Gaffney’s 2005 CD project, “The New Then,” which was co-produced by Hammond and Sinclair.

While Get the Led Out has been performing for over a decade, bassist Childs joined in 2010, and he considers every one of his band members “an ace” due to their serious dedication to musicianship.

“We don’t use sampling,” said Childs. “Everything you hear is one hundred percent live.”

Childs is a self-taught bassist. He learned from listening to albums. He said, “I was very meticulous. I used to like Rush and Kansas … things that were really difficult. I was nuts about getting every little detail. I don’t know many guys that would do that. It’s a good practice for everybody.”

When asked to explain why Led Zeppelin – a band that released their last album, “Coda” in 1982 – is still so popular today, Childs explained, “They were the first really big rock band. They were iconic. The state of popular culture today – what a garbage dump. Pop culture is so bad, there’s not much new rock out there. Dudes seem to be going back to stuff they liked earlier. The seventies was a good decade for rock music. The eighties was very corporate driven, artistic merit was at an all time low, more about profit than about music. The nineties, you had some great bands … Stone Temple Pilots, Nirvana, Alice in Chains, Sound Garden … when I was giving guitar lessons, kids wanted to learn stuff form the seventies and rock from the nineties. Rock was still a lot stronger in the early two thousands than it is now. The pop culture completely disappeared. They have to go to a different time period to get it. They [Led Zeppelin] were around a long time.”

Childs is fascinated by the audience at his shows, which range in age from 7 to 70, but what is really surprising to him is the emotional impact the band has on their fans. He said that at the meet and greets after the show, “A lot [of fans] would have tears in their eyes. It’s very moving for the crowds.”

When Childs isn’t performing he leads a content, uncomplicated life with his long time girlfriend and their German shepherd. “We like outdoorsy stuff,” he said. “We both work-out. We hiked the Grand Canyon. She’s working during the week, I’m working on weekends. We basically hang out and watch movies. Very simple.”
