No one likes to think of their parents becoming elderly, especially when we have relied upon them throughout most of our lives. However,

it’s better to have plenty of time to prepare for the potential challenges that could arise as your parents get older. If your parents already have limited mobility, it’s a good idea to start thinking about the adaptations you might need to help them make to their home so they can continue living independently. Wheelchair accessible vehicles are one such adaptation which can help your parents to get around if they have limited mobility.

Discuss Their Needs

The first thing you will need to do when beginning to prepare for your parents getting older, is talk to them about how their needs are changing. You might find that they are having difficulties that they didn’t feel comfortable telling you about, such as struggling to do everyday tasks like going food shopping. This will help you to establish the sort of care they might need now and in the future. This is particularly important if you think they have health problems which may lead to them to need a care home.

Start Planning Your Finances

If your elderly parents are going to need care as they get older, this can become a financial burden. You will need to start figuring out realistically how much you can afford to save. This is a worthwhile step to take, as being hit with unexpected financial costs of care can place a huge strain on families. If you haven’t got one already, you might need to create a budget to ensure that you are spending within your means.

Spend More Time With Them

This might be difficult if you live far apart or have a busy schedule to keep up but spending more time with your parents as they get older will help you to keep an eye on their health and spot any warning signs. In particular, it’s important to watch out for unusual confusion and difficulty with decision making. Many people report visiting their elderly parent’s homes for the first time in a long time and noticing a decline that they hadn’t expected to find. Of course, forgetfulness is a normal sign of aging so don’t be alarmed if your mum can’t find her keys!

Create A Family Support Network

If you have a large family with lots of siblings, it’s important to make sure that you have discussed the future with them. This way any potential care or financial support can be split between you to prevent one person from taking all the strain. If you have a smaller family, it can be more difficult to do this and you might have to enlist the help of your spouse or partner. Whoever you choose, it’s a good idea to make sure everyone is on the same page and has an understanding of their responsibility as your parent’s age. Communication is essential when making sure that everyone is healthy and happy.

A good article. Many aren't prepared to face this when it comes.

My mother began to need help about five years ago, so with counseling she entered assisted living. She is now 92 and each year requires more by way of assistance and health issues. Of her five children, only my sister lives close enough to see her on a weekly basis. The rest of us are a thousand miles away and I have a great deal of difficulty getting there since I am receiving care for my quadriplegia in my home, unable to travel great distances.

Fortunately, we are not financially drained because she is on welfare of her own choosing. But my sister is faced with all the weekly problems that aging as brought to my mother. It is very trying for her to meet all my mother's needs.
