A short article on the mind...

The mind is an inner city life all of its own, … a hustling, bustling, place, of never-ending action.  Real or imagined, the mind gains stimulation from living, and ‘normally’ abides in a cycle of yearning, endless, attachment… almost pleasingly insatiable.  We are familiar with this inner city life, thinking it’s normal, desiring the game, sometimes forgetting life.

The mind, crammed to over-flowing, abides in its temporary home—the body, and together they excrete the pollutants assailing our senses, often ignoring warning hazards—physical, emotional, mental, or spiritual—demanding further colourful experience, further action, and distraction.

Whatever the distraction—the screaming of our quiet minds is concealed in the activity, disguised in the wrappings of meetings, gatherings, and friendly greetings.  As humans, we are social creatures, and enjoy interaction, however, we are also beings that flourish in solitude and peace.  In repose, we remember our purpose, where we’re going, loved ones, fellow men, and life…

When we breathe a conscious hearty breath, the things that are precious to us, bring nectar to the mind, and settle more deeply in our hearts…

Suddenly satisfied—amid the noise, the inner city life quietens, and the jungle resembles trees again, where birds rest and sing their truth birds tunes.  When a conscious breath is taken, we remember to remember our humanness—a distinction between animals and people.  The busiest inner city life is no longer a land of competition.  We are human and can no longer act mindlessly.  Our inner city live is as crazy or as calm as the quality of our breath.  The quality of our breath depends upon the quality of our minds.  A quality, that equates with the worth of oneself.

Inner neon lights spark:  It is true , it is true … the city, the people, the noise, the confusion, it is you it is you.  A reflection of me—the world is as harsh or soft as my breath, a breath not deriving from–but riding according to, each thought.  External life is dependant on my inner city life, on the atmosphere of my mind.  In the shape of my reactions, life responses… manifesting beauty or its opposite.

The beauty of space doesn’t run according to metropolis, honking horns and self-fixation, it runs with the breath… the more breath we breathe, the more space in our minds and hearts…our inner city life expands like open meadows, to embrace the world.  As breathing is the link of life, we realize we are not the centre of all experience— the wider world experiences life simultaneously!

In this greater space, people are seen, as they are, with expressions, feelings, and lives—multi-faceted, internally and eternally.  We are the same; just wonderfully unique, and slightly different…inseparable through living on a planet that houses innumerable individual inner city lives …

Very nice article. I recall a statement," An untrained mind is like a wild horse. It is restless and resisting". The observations about breath are also apt- longer, deeper breaths lead to quiter, calm minds and vice-versa. Its a self reinforcing virtuous circle. We say in India that " How you live depends on how you breathe" which is acutally a yoga dictum which propagates breathing from the abdomen

Oh Suzie you capture the imagination with your glimpse inside what we often take so for granted. Some open the gates to this internal city and pass out a key to it like they were reproduced, some only offer a key to special people and some only allow guided tours. I think we poets and writers give ours out on the street corners.

Histories of the world are generally written to either celebrate technology and science, or to herald doom. My book examines the path of the spirit in the onward rush.
