May 10, 2004 was National Election Day in the Philippines.I went early to Barangay Guadalupe’s voting center with my 18 year old son to vote so that I could laze around the house for the rest of the day. My lazing around only lasted for two hours when the phone rang insistently.

It was my friend calling from the emergency room of the hospital. Her twelve year old son was hurriedly admitted that very morning. His left hand was badly mangled by their bakery’s automatic dough kneader. He was in severe pain. The doctor would try to save the hand but it would all depend on how the boy’s hand would mend. Too much damage was done by the solid steel rollers on the flesh , nerves and veins ---- specifically the palm and fingers .

Two agonizing weeks was spent in the hospital waiting for the boy’s hand to turn out for the better . My friend , her husband , their family as well as their friends started praying for the recovery of their son. The united silent petition was to please spare JR’s fingers from amputation Lord ! They also offered petition masses in the Senor Santo Nino Basilica, in Our Lady of Guadalupe Church, in the Carmelite Monastery and in the
Poor Claire’s Monastery.

On the fateful day of May 24, 2004 the good doctor came out of the operating room with a very happy face. He said the whole family of this boy must indeed have very strong prayerful faith in God. There was no need in amputating any of the fingers. He only took away the dead skin and flesh on the palm and the fingers.

May 30,2004 being the Feast of the Pentecost, JR’s parents agreed to have me write this. For what better way is there to proclaim the goodness of Our Lord who spared the fingers of a boy , if not this testimony ?
