Wonderful read. Two years ago I was fortunate enough to attend my 50th reunion from high school. My classmates had not changed, they had just gotten older. In 1978 on my trip around the world, I stopped in Manila for four days and toured on two of them. I was struck by the beauty of the people I met and their openness. There was some concern about Marcos and I could see why, but the times were quite peaceful and enjoyable. Currently I have a Filipina tenant in my house. She is a bit younger than you, having graduated high school and gone to college in the 1980s.

I know my comments come in 8 years late. I was browsing the internet searching for Facebook contacts when I came across Nellie's article. Perhaps nobody will ever read this but it does not really matter...
Like Nellie, Mr. Ty had a great influence in my formative years as a somewhat non-conformist student at ICCHS. I received news about his struggle against cancer here in the US and his passing away. I understand that my parents paid their last respect to him.
I remember him as a tall and no nonsense disciplinarian. I was a bit intimidated by him but I knew deep down that he cared and wanted the best for us. In a way, his conversion to Catholicism did not really surprise me because his self-sacrifice, service, devotion and concern for the students and the less fortunate is very much in line with Catholic Social Teaching. Chinese culture reveres teachers and scholars and the school always brings out the best from members of its community.
Our family will pray for him tomorrow at Mass and I will request prayers for him from priests and friends here in the US.

This is a wonderful homey fanily type of writing that gives such a wonderful insight into the workings of GOD into daily life. All of us have had similar ups and downs, but Nellie had used words so well to express all of this.

This has nice cadance. The lines and sentiment are very good. Instead of having so many choppy, irregular verses, I would have combined them into one larger verse, so as not to lose the impact of the message. Irregular verses are distracting. ~E
