A few terms used on submarines that might help your sub story ring a bit more real.

Here you go with a few terms used on the boats these days.  These are in no order, and are just kinda fun.

RACK -  A bed on the submarine. This might even  be on top of of under a live torpedo or Tomahawk missile.

NUB- A new unqualified member of the crew. Having just been through boot camp and sub, or nuke school they still have very little hair.

NON-QUAL- A person who ha yet to earn his Dolphins.

DINK- A person who is not progressing in his submarine or watch station quals.

FLICK- The evening movie.

ONE EYED LADY- The Periscope.

FISH- This has two meanings. 1. The Dolphins as worn on the uniform to signify qualification in submarines. 2. A torpedo.  This is not used much these days.  We just cause them weapons.

BOOMER- A ballistic missile submarine. These are the ones that carry the Trident Missiles. Designated SSBN

FAST BOAT- A hunter-killer submarine. These seek the enemy out. Designated SSN.

SAIL- Other nations call this the conning tower.

SCREW- Also two meanings. 1. The ships propeller. 2. Well, use your imagination.

SLIDERS-  Hamburgers or Cheese Burgers

PUSS ROCKETS- Hot Dogs

BABBOON BUTT- Corned Beef 

BUG JUICE- A drink like Koolaid. At one time we used it to clean toilets as it is very acidic. This was banned though when it was discovered it was damaging stainless steel.

NUKE-  A member of the crew who operates the reactor or any of it's systems.

CONER- Anyone not a Nuke.

PING JOCKY-  Sonar operator

PECKER CHECKER- The Corpsman

XO- Executive Officer

COB- Chief of the Boat.  Highest Ranking Enlisted member of the crew.

CO- Commanding Officer

THE OLD MAN- See above

BRAVO-ZULU- Good Job

GOAT LOCKER- Where the Chief Petty Officers live.

RAIN LOCKER- The shower.

HURT LOCKER- Sick Bay

JENNY-  The O2 Generator

OSCAR- Any object thrown over the side to simulate a man overboard for training.

PLAY PEN- A temporary Frame set on top ofthe sail to allow more people access during the manuvering watch.

MANUVERING WATCH- Stationed when the sub in leaving or coming into port. This watch puts the best crewmen is the right place.

RIG FOR DIVE- A very intense process where each and every item that would allow water into the boat is checked and double chesked prior to diving the ship.

POOPY SUIT- Blue submarine coveralls.

GEDUNK- Any type of treat not supplied by the ship. Candy Bars, Sodas, Chips, etc.

WATCH- A shift at your job. A torpedoman would stand TMOW or Torpedoman of the Watch. The Nukes might stand Reactor Operator, or Throttleman. Even the cooks have a watch called GALLEY WATCH CAPTAIN. Officers stand EOOW  Enginnering Officer of the Watch, or OOD Officer of the Deck. A watch on submarines is usually 6 hours with 12 hours off.  However you might have to be Port and Starboard. Six hours on and six off.
