The concept of good versus evil is a universal one to which every culture subscribes. Legends are told and retold as instruments with which to raise children and inspire warriors. They provide moral structure within which we conduct ourselves. And they lay the foundations upon which whole civilizations are born.

In Christianity it is God and Satan who provide the names of good and evil. With the coming of Christ a new evil character came to light called The Antichrist, and it has remained a feared and hated part of the faith of millions ever since. So much so that it sometimes seems as if, in the guise of powerful men and entities, it is everywhere at once, only to disappear like smoke before the rest of the prophesy can play out. So what is the Antichrist exactly, and why is it so often believed to exist but without a definitive identity?

First, one must understand what the Antichrist is said to be. It is an opponent of Jesus. The opposite, if you will. It is Satan incarnate bringing death and mayhem of the spirit as well as the body upon humanity. It is cruelty and the absence of hope, as well as the extinguisher of spiritual light. It seeks to drive a permanent wedge between God and His children, to defeat God and to rule in God's place. To put it in the vernacular, it is one bad dude!

The Bible doesn't foretell exactly who the Antichrist is or will be. It only gives us signs to look for that will give clues as to when and if it has arrived. It is up to God's followers to identify it when it makes an appearance. For this reason, with no definitive named individual, there seems to have been many “Antichrists” down through the ages. Philosophers and religious leaders have often named powerful despotic individuals in their world as the Antichrist. Indeed, many believe that there have been more than one Antichrist. Possibly this is because there have been so many who claimed to be the Messiah, known as false or pseudo Messiahs, and the Bible sometimes refers to these as Antichrists, because they do not preach the doctrines of Jesus.

Clues listed in a Google AI search as to the identity of the “true ” Antichrist include “the performance of false miracles, the blaspheming of God, the persecution of nonbelievers, rising to global power through charismatic leadership and deceptive peace, claiming divinity, and enforcing a mark (ie 666) to control economic activity, all while leading its followers away from their faith and values.” The Antichrist is, simply put, a political Pied Piper.

Through the centuries many have been named the Antichrist. There have been entities such as the Roman Empire and the Catholic church that have been said to fulfill the role, as well individuals, such as Emperor Nero and various Popes. The beliefs were born in the context of their time, and who's to say they weren't accurate? Even the disciple John said there were many Antichrists, or false prophets.

So if the viewpoint is taken that there have been many Antichrists, who are some of the top contenders of recent memory? At the top of the list would have to be Adolph Hitler. Maniacal, narcissistic, cruel...if ever a human being could said to have been an Antichrist it was him. Some would say that Joseph Stalin was another candidate. As was Cambodia's Pol Pot and Jim Jones, the leader of the People's Temple cult, who led his four hundred plus followers to commit mass suicide.

When Barrack Obama ran for office, there were those who tried to convince us that he was the Antichrist. I would submit that the current President of the United States better fits the description. He seeks ultimate power, he continually states that he has ended many wars, bringing peace to troubled nations, and rectified all the economic woes of the country (ie working miracles). He persecutes anyone who speaks against him and who he deems less than human (specifically non-white people). He demands proof of approval in the form of government documentation (but many times rejects it anyway), and uses it as a resource in ferreting out those he deems a threat to him in some way. He has risen to power through “charismatic leadership” of the Make America Great Again (MAGA) movement, and he has influenced thousands, perhaps millions, of his followers to abandon the faith-based doctrines of peace, tolerance, and brotherhood in favor of institutional hatred. Finally, one could argue that he is the ultimate Antichrist because he, unlike other Antichrists in history, is in the unique position to annihilate humanity through the use of nuclear weapons. If this is so, could he be the final sign that the second coming of Christ is at hand?

I do not profess to know the answer to that question. I only know what I can see before me. I believe in the battle of good and evil, and I believe that the spirit of evil, in the form of men and women, has been in evidence for many millennia. If this latest incarnation of it doesn't destroy us, it will continue to appear with some regularity for millennia to come.
