I once had respect for the Republican party. I didn’t always agree with them, seldom in fact, but I respected them because I believed they in general wanted what was best for our country and were willing to work with the Democrats in finding common ground for the running of our government. But sometime around the end of the Reagan administration my mind began to see things going on within the party that worried me. I sensed deep fissures opening up between the old school and the new, and I began to see the beginnings of a power play that would eventually lead us to where we are today with our nation fractured along political, economic, and social lines. But I chose to write it off as ridiculous paranoia on my part.
I now know my gut was speaking the truth and sounding an early alarm of danger ahead.
More and more I’m learning of the Republican party’s willingness to do whatever underhanded action it takes to consolidate their power. The most alarming is their penchant to restructure the voting system so that, in making it harder for citizens to cast their ballots, they are effectively seeking to shut out anyone who dares to vote against them. New rules specifically for women voters are proposed. People of color are harassed and intimidated to the point that many are afraid to vote. The Republican party has become the long arm of fascist law, reaching into the very fabric of American civil rights.
Republicans in general seem to have left their honor by the wayside. They have become greedy in taking from the American public and miserly in giving back. If they give back at all. Our democracy is hanging out over a precipice. It is becoming a fragile remnant of what was once a great and shining light upon the world. A world that now views us with contempt as corrupt and dangerous. That world is standing united against us, watching uneasily as we implode, and who can blame them? What will it take to reclaim our collective soul and restore our democracy?
In the end, we created the danger. Only we can disarm it. Hopefully it can be done before we completely annihilate ourselves and all we once stood for.
I don't think our founding fathers wanted a two party system that has gradually taken over. For example, the original Republican party was a very liberal party created by abolitionists. Originally, a minority party that became the party of the North over the party of the South, very conservative and slave owning for profit and prosperity for the white few.
Requiring a majority vote to win an election, means that any minority population does not have a say, unless members of that minority join one of the two major parties.
When ignorance and hatred overcome knowledge and understanding, that does put us on the precipice. We were the first country to experience democracy and may now lose it, if everyone doesn't get out and vote the scoundrels out of office.
The ignorance of the current administration. Turning their backs on science and good health practices. May have done more than damage to our political system. They may have accelerated global extinction and a turning point in global warming that we can't recover from.
If that genie is left out of the bottle, worry about immigrants and nuclear bombs in small countries will be moot. All the riches in the world will not save anyone.
