Part 2: The Music (7 Albums)

B) Reverbnation Streaming of Songs and Albums: 

The band Interstitium - currently composed (in our reality) of Ian Irvine (Hobson), Ev Charalambous, Kara Indigo and Sue King-Smith - appear in a number of the main story-lines ('alternative realities') explored in the novel The City of Quartz (Book One of the Songs of the Interstitium transmedia project).

1. The First Novel: The City of Quartz, published in 2016, is set in two versions of central Victoria, Australia. In one realty Interstitium appear as a late 80s Australian post-punk alt rock band that folds soon after its lead singer, Rowan Sweeney, goes off the rails. In the second narrative ('reality') the band forms in the late 1990s to play an important gig at Big Gold Mountain on the eve of a military invasion by a neghbouring country (New Albion). Contemporary post-punk alt rock songs from both of these versions of Interstitium thus feature in the playlist below.

The Interstitium playlist below also features versons of songs recovered from the Abraham Isles songbooks whch feature in the TheCity of Quartz. Those songs featured in the second parallel story line from the Cityof Quartz where they were played by Interstitium and a range of other bands at an anti-war concert on the eve of a military invasion.

2. Second Novel (Due out 2025):The Isles of Ruins, set mostly in the UK in 2009-10, but also in a feudal fantasy/VR world called 'Ukatha', sees Interstitium appear in thefirst story-line as a highly successful UK post-punk alt. rock band active globally between 1991 and story commencement in 2009. As the story begins, however, Rowan Sweeney is an editor who writes songs in his spare time. He comes across the key creative force in 'Interstitium' (what in other realities/timelines is a band-member) due to a merger in which his publisher takes over a small north Wales 'occult' publishing house full of not just writers, as it turnsout, but musicians, painters, poets, occultists and artists. Rowan shows his unpublished songs to the 'resident tortured and recently suicidal musical genius' - also a member of superstar band Interstitium (currently neither touring or creating new music, indeed they are fighting amongst themselves). 

Time Line 2:The Isle of Ruins: The version of 'Rowan Sweeney' featuring in the book's secondstory line, set in a fantasy/VR world, is also a musician/poet, however, his music is traditional in tone and theme and is linked to his tribe's view that great musicians are shamans manipulating magical and sacred energies through words, melodies, performances. He thus doesn't have a 'band' (i.e. what we call Interstitium (band), as such,but some fo his songs and melodies have leached across into the bad playlist you will listen to below.   

3. The THIRD NOVEL IN THE SERIES: A version of Interstitium (band) will also appear in a key storyline associated with Book Three of the series, Alt Rock/Alt Right: The Unlikely Dissident. In that story line the band is a Scottish/Australian post-punk alt rock band that achieved a reasonable amount of success in the 1990s and continued on as an underground outfit into the 2000s, despite the lead singer, another version of Rowan Sweeney, experimenting with other styles of music from the 1990s onwards. Unlike the various 'Interstitiums' found in The City of Quartz and The Isle of Ruins novels, Rowan's connections to Australia are more cursory in this book, since in that particular reality/time-line only his father migrated to Australia in the 1970s; his mother, and Rowan himself, had remained in northern England and Scotland throughout his childhood and youth.

4. Book Four: The Orpheus Plague (part fiction/part this reality biography): Book Four will feature two main 'timelines' plus elements of timeline developments (to 2024) related to 'realities' explored in the previous three novels. One of the timelines in this book will be concerned with factual events in our world. The other takes the 'Songs of the Interstitium' project on a SF path... more on that time-line to be added later this year!

In the factual timeline/narrative, Interstitium (band) exists in our reality exactly as you are encountering it today whilst reading this page! it emerged in 2013-14 as the brainchild of Ian Irvine, after a two decades long sabbatical from the traditional music scene. Kara Indigo, Ev Charalambous and Sue King-Smith join this version of the band (and project), ably assisted by professional producers and session musicians employed or sub-contracted by CustomAnthems song and music production company (UK) and Timmy De Armitt (USA)..

In our reality Interstitium (formed: 2013) is fronted by 'Ian Irvine' former lead singer and co-songwriter for Goya's Child (Original line-up) [go to .GoyasChild (Original) twitter handle:  Goya's Child (Original) Youtube playlist and Goya's Child (original line-up) 'online information site'], an early 1990s Australian post-punk alt.rock band that featured two lineups: the first (containing Irvine) from 1991 to late 1993, and the second, without him, from late 1993 to 2014. Note: A version of 'Goya's Child' also features, very briefly, in the second timeline/reality explored in the The City of Quartz. 

The first (or 'factual') narrative of Book Four primarily narrates the development of the "Songs of the Interstitium" project in our reality between 2013 and 2024 - though with important throwbacks to the period 1964 to 2014. In Book Four the various versions of 'Rowan Sweeny' and Interstitium (and Goya's Child) finally merge into one narrative as the human species confronts epochal challenges requiring new understandings of 'fundamental creativity' and 'culture'. All major, minor, protagonist sand antagonists linked to the project contibute to the birthing struggles of a survival-oriented new paradigm out of the toxicities, and sometimes the key strengths, of historic religious, philsophical and scientific paradigms. However, will the required paradigm shifts occur in time or will Freud's 'thanatos instinct' or 'death instinct' be victorious? The second narrative of Book Four tracks the project's answer to this question.

*28th May 2017: A 25 page article entitled ‘Are You Living Inside a 23 Century Literary Masterpiece?’ was published at Authorsden.com. The article explores the history of the ‘Simulated Reality’ trope in Sci Fi and Quantum Fiction and includes a worksheet designed to assist writers create their own ‘Simulated Reality’ stories. The article is an in-depth exploration of some of the material covered in the workshop discussed below. The characters involved in the poem appear to be an Editor/Publisher version of the same Rowan Sweeney found in The City of Quartz and a famous Australian fantasy writer resident in the UK (though this is yet to be confirmed).

ABOUT IAN: Ian Irvine (Hobson) is the author of two novels, a book of poetry and a nonfiction book on chronic forms of alienation and ennui. His works have featured in various Australian national writing anthologies as well as in over 100 journals and magazines. He has co-edited around 20 writing anthologies and has taught as a creative arts educator and course coordinator since 1994. He is the founder and chief songwriter of the alt. rock band "Interstitium", and was also the lead singer and co-songwriter of Australian alt rock band "Goya's Child (Original)" before his departure in 1994 (33 of his songs from that band have been professionally recorded, and appear online under the name "Ian Irvine (Solo)". Overall, Ian has written 239 songs (incl. 200+ for Interstitium) and many have been professionally produced. 

Given he was born, and for a time raised, in Manchester (England), Interstitium (as well as Ian's first band Goya's Child - Original Lineup) were heavily influenced by the various international music revolutions washing through that city at the end of the 20th century. The two bands (representing a 30 year music.composing career for Ian) fuse UK alt rock (particularly the Manchester/Madchester sound but also the music of bands like The Clash, U2 and The Cure) with antipodean alt rock traditions. Ian has thus sometimes been nicknamed the 'Antipodean Son of the Manchester Scene'. The is because he was born in the midst (historically and geographically speaking) of a remarkable 'creative cluster' of now internationally renowned punk, post-punk, psychedelic rock, garage rock, Indie Rock, etc. musicians.
