Getting laid-off still sucks.
You go from promise (of a bright present and future) to a downward spiral and peril.
One day you are a professional. The next day you're struggling to apply for $275 maximum per week to feed a family of four.
So what do you do with your scorecard is at zero?
You get busy, so busy that time does not count.
You plan and act as if it is impossible to fail.
I did the same, after getting laid off as a Director of Business Development for a high-tech company. Things were on the roll until I fell off the rollercoaster.
The best I could do was a temp job managing subcontracts.
Be as it may, I worked hard--overtime with no pay, going the extra mile.
Then I was offered a Director's job, a permanent staff position.
Was I lucky? Maybe.
I do know now that I'm lucky I'm not lazy.

One of the secrets is as simple as guest-posting on blogs.
So, where do you guest post? It’s up to you. You can do a quick Google search, just type in "niche + write for us" and see what happens.

Next, you's visit their guest post guidelines and yes, pitch your post idea!
And don’t forget to spend a few minutes drafting your author bio. This is the best piece of copy to persuade audiences to visit your site. I use several different author bios depending on where I am guest posting.
After a while you'll connect with B2C and B2B businesses providing blog writing, ghostwriting and copywriting services.
In parallel, the best thing you can do for your new freelance writing biz is to network with other writers (hint: Authors Den). Remember, we are all in this together and it isn’t a competition but cooperation!
Reach out to a few freelance writers and get direct: ask them their opinion on a starting rate.

Well, to maximize and improve your chances at landing a quality writing gig, you need to work both ends – indirect and direct approaches.
While cold pitching is a direct way to land work, warm pitching, on the other hand, is a more indirect and slower way. Leverage existing warm relationships with brands and business.
For example, when I find a business in my niche, I follow them on LinkedIn and Like their Facebook fan page. That way I can keep an eye on them and engage with their posts when I can.

I wrote my entire professional life according to the rules provided by my superiors. I had success and some promotions for my writing articles, policies, procedures, computer programs etc. etc. So, when I retired/was fired in 2011, I collected unemployment for three years. All the while being given menial jobs like stocking shelves, etc.
I spend my time now writing and publishing what I write. It's a freedom that only hard work and saving throughout your working life can give you.
