How to Tame a Lion
By: Bernice Angoh
Considered the king of the jungle, the lion is massive, hairy, fierce, powerful, strong, wild, courageous, adventurous, confident, unafraid, persistent, loud and bold. Why would anyone think such a beast can be tamed? Don’t they know like maternal instinct, they are born to be in the wild, to be strong and bold and fearless? Why are so many people trying to cage an animal whose purpose is to be free and ferocious?
Why do so many women think they can change or ‘Tame’ a man?
Society has made it its case study. Everywhere you go; there are signs and little inconspicuous messages hinting women how a man must be. It is a big business now, the franchise has begun, buy into yours or forever be unhappy. Men have more pressure from society how to act, how to behave, how to be a man than women do. Bear in mind I am not talking about boys here. We can now spot the difference between a man and a boy from miles away.
A boy is reckless and confused, he is childlike and selfish.
A man is concise and purposeful; he is bold, considerate and respectful.
Media; Television, radio, magazines and internet are all wrong forms of informative venues through which most women get their education about life and men in general. Even some churches nowadays have joined in the revolution. We have been inducted into the academy of Emasculating men. They have to be like us or else all hell breaks loose.
Starting from parenting, we teach our young boys to ‘Take it like a man’, ‘Boys don’t cry’ and so on. What if we just allowed them to grow into what they were meant to be, correcting them only on those things that need correcting like, being respectful, kind, and considerate and all other values that need to be instilled in them? We are not God, we cannot choose who and what someone becomes. We can only be there as a guide to teach them right from wrong.
When did it become a sign of weakness if a man cries? Very few men have an outlet through which they can dump their frustrations and anger. Women take it for granted that they have friends, families and even the husbands themselves. Yes, a woman’s very nature is to be soft, tender, caring and emotional. A man on the other hand, by nature, is strong, bold, adventurous, defiant and wild at heart.
We now have men who dress like little boys, pants falling off their behinds, shirts that could cut off blood circulation-shirts they could’ve worn out in high school; they throw tantrums and want their way. They show no respect and are rude, oh by the way isn’t this the definition of a boy? I guess we are clear by now of that very subtle difference.
Since when was it okay for a man to stay at home all day, do nothing like a domesticated animal. His nature is to want to provide for his family, he has that hunger to want to protect and take care of his own. This is the very definition of a true man. While some men do all this, they may be lacking in other major traits that makes a man a man. It is okay for a man to be romantic-trust me they have their own ways, but women, we cannot expect them to become our girlfriends.
Castration is not the only way a man is emasculated. What is emasculating in the first place? It is to weaken, to deprive of masculine vigor, spirit and render effeminate, and to be characterized by unmanly softness. Here is a list of can and can’t do’s, little things that we overlook...
