Telephone rings all day! Callers ask questions. Then say Thank you!
People visit saying: Hello. How are you? Is there no time for a reply?
If I say thank you or much obliged, the appropriate response is: You Are Welcome!
It Is Not : No ...THANK YOU!!!
Otherwise, the conversation, regardless of length, then becomes a competition! Your thanks are not better than mine!!

A new scam is, when you answer with your name, they record it, and then they use that recording as a verification for purchases, bank drafts and other things. So, to ward off most unwanted or unnecessary calls, I answer with a loud "Yellow!" Only my friends and people who actually want to talk to me tolerate my crudeness and ask for me after that. ;-)
