You have me wondering what the smell was. In NYC, it could have been an opening to the sewer. I was driving in rural Arkansas once and smelled a terrible stink in the air. Finally, I caught up with an 18 wheeler apparently hauling pigs. It was all I could do to pass that truck on that narrow, curving highway, but I had to, the stench was so bad. When I finally did and left that stinker behind, I breathed both a sigh of relief and fresh air.
Once, while taking a narrow shortcut street uphill to the highway to my house I met an 18 wheeler coming downhill in the center of the road, forcing me to the curb and stopped against it as the trailer flew by and scraped my rear fender. The driver jumped out of his truck and chased me to a nearby house where I retreated and the woman there called the police for me. He kept yelling, "You hit my truck!" in a threatening way. I ignored him waiting for the police. When an officer came he talked to the truck driver first, and then let them go. He then came to my car and gave me a citation. When I got home, I looked at the damage on my rear fender. There were circular grinding marks showing that his rear trailer tires were rotating against my fender. And I was not moving. I went to the police station and called the office around and explained it to him. He changed the charge. I called the trucking company, and they reimbursed me for the repair. Said that the truck driver had been a bad actor all along.

I have heard this story, often with an "out of body experience" looking down on what is going on as well as a light at the end of the tunnel. And, like yours, the story is often used to proselytize for Christianity.
While being operated on for determining and correcting spinal cord injury, I received too much anesthetic and relaxed to the point where I lost blood pressure to my brain long enough for my neurosurgeon to interrupt the surgery, restore blood to my brain, and wake me on the operating table. He didn't complete the operation, but returned me to my room and gave me morphine for the pain.
When I awoke I had no pain except a tightness in the back of my neck where the surgery took place C3-C8. I also couldn't move any extremities from my shoulders down. My legs came back within a week or two without much pain. My arms came back within a week with tremendous pain like sticking them into barrels of biting ants. When they came back, both arms and hands and fingers were atrophied and I had greatly altered feeling. They were permanently paralyzed.
During the first 10 days, whenever I would close my eyes to go to sleep, I would find myself being abruptly flipped backwards into a black hole that forced me to open my eyes and stay awake. Finally, about 4 o'clock one morning I became so agitated, my neurosurgeon came and gave me a hypo in the arm and I was out for about two hours. I still was sleep deprived for a few more days until I got off the morphine that was keeping me hyper agitated and awake.
During the surgery, when my doctor woke me up to see if I was alive, and later, when I had the similar falling over backward in the dark experience you write about, I never came close to seeing a white light, although I probably wasn't close to death and I think that the white light may be the brain's last message to the mind similar to unconsciousness as the brain's way of saving us from pain. In other words, making death less frightful and painful. No god required.

Some very well taken points. There is a lot of information and it appears that where we get our information tends to slant our view one way or the other and sometimes, dangerously wrong.
The problem with healthcare is the focus on how it should be insured rather than the actual cost of healthcare at the provider level. There's a lot of price gouging going on and preferential treatment for those who can pay. That's where Congress should focus so that insurance costs can be reduced.

Your article left the news media to talk about the differences between Putin and Trump. There is endless discussion on that so I won't.
The media has been described as being "fake" by the president and by large sectors of our society. I would agree that media knowledge available in so many sources may require many, to keep their position and followership tend to sensationalize what is happening when it really isn't sensational. They make mistakes, but correct them quickly. The fourth estate is always about finding the truth.
There is also a tendency for the viewership to think that individual events happening a world away are happening in one's own neighborhood. This is a psychological effect that probably has been studied, but should be clear to everyone who falls all victim into that kind of thinking.
For every classic showdown Summit between the leaders of the two most potent nuclear powers in the world, there is a story making national news happening in the small town to folks that could be you or I. The fact that these "filler" stories and videos have time on national news shows that really important news does not take up all of our lives.

Well taken. There are few ways that young people can learn manners anymore. I am now getting so many advertising, political and scam calls that I have become very crude in my answering.
A new scam is, when you answer with your name, they record it, and then they use that recording as a verification for purchases, bank drafts and other things. So, to ward off most unwanted or unnecessary calls, I answer with a loud "Yellow!" Only my friends and people who actually want to talk to me tolerate my crudeness and ask for me after that. ;-)

There certainly is a lot of conflicting information. Since throughout life we naturally (before vitamins were supplemented by various means going back into alchemy and medicine men potions and cures) supplied with vitamins from diet, a good diet should provide most of the vitamins needed, even for the elderly.
I don't believe in excess in anything, so I'm very leery of mega vitamin supplements for their potential harm. I take a multivitamin designed for silver ingestion and that is it.

These atrocious practices still exist in many countries. Fortunately the Internet and the ubiquitous cell phone with photo and video capability linked to the Internet makes this kind of atrocity more visible than to individuals sharing hospital rooms. I participate in petitions every day pointing out the intolerance of such practices and demanding that they stop and the criminals perpetrating them be dealt with. It's working. The little girl from Pakistan, shot in the head, has received the Nobel Prize for peace.
By simply writing this little article of your personal experience, you are bringing to attention the abhorrent practice and calling for its end to everyone on the Internet.
