Standing at window, looking down at the sidewalk, she saw Mr. Callihan get in his car and leave.  She wondered what he really wanted.  Why did he apply for the job?  Was it to gain her confidence so he could kill her or a member of her family?

 Seeing him leave, she started down the stairs as Art was coming up.  She looked at him as if she hated him.  Art started to say something, then saw her face.  He had never seen her this way. Why did she react so unbecoming?  He didn't know if he should ask her why or just let it go.  There must be a reason for her rude behavior.

Jean waled into the kitchen and got a cup of coffee.  Art followed and stopped her.  "What is wrong with you?  Why did you treatj our guest so rude?"

"As I said before, he was not a guest.  Do you know why he wanted the job?

"Well of course, I interviewed him yesterday; I thought he would do a good job."

"Did you really?  What made you think so?  How can you be so stupid?  I thought I knew you better.  You are supposed to be a tough writer, know all the angles peope use.  Well, I can tell you this, he wasn't here for the job."

"Jean, how can  you say that?  You never gave him a chance to explain.  All you did was to put him down.  I was embarrassed by your actions."

"You were embarrassed by my actions!  How dare you say that?"

"Explain to me then why you acted that way, please?  I want to hear your reasons so I will understand."  Art decided she had lost all control over her mind and body.

"Remember the telephone calls from the older man.
 

"Yes, so what?"

"So what!  Think about it Art, did his voice sound familiar?"

"No, not really.  What in the hell are you getting at?"

"Let me tell you since you don't remember the man on the phone.  Your Mr. Callilhan is the man making the threatening call to us.  I'm surprised you didn't recognize his voice."
