Be seen, be heard and sell. Authors, to sell your fine writing works, pull up your bootstraps and leave your writers' den.
I'm sure readers of this article are seasoned booksellers, but for those not so savvy, might I share what I've learned? Create a buzz about your book. As difficult as it is for some, talk your story up. You wrote it because you believed in the story, believed it was worth telling and sharing. That’s why it’s a book. Selling one's book is work albeit a labor of love. Your book won't sell if you are cloistered in your den. People want to meet authors, hear what you have to say about your writings, listen to passages from your book and have you convince them why they should part with their money to buy your book. I know this. I'm a newly published author and my social life, night and day has been amp up 100%. Not since a young single nightclub adult have I attended so many public and private events and all for the sake of a book sale. Carry your book with you at all times. I've run into people around town as well as store personal and with my book in the car trunk have made a few sales. Attend all social events, first birthday parties, weddings, Tupperware parties, -- any place where there are people. After all people are consumers. As a self-publisher I have been able to get some book reads in independent bookstores. Yes, you will have to call them, or better, stop by a bookstore and talk your way in the door. The bookstore owner will want to know why your book belongs in their store and who will come to your book read. What will you do to secure attendance? Therefore start out in your local area unless you have clients, friends, family and others in a particular area. When you secure a bookstore event, email, mail and then, telephone your people inviting them to your event. Bookstores aren’t always going to open doors so how to sell your book besides on-line? Private book parties. They are turning out to be my best source for book sales. Plan ahead. I sent postcards up to 8 months before my book came out announcing it. This way you can take pre-orders. I now use the same postcard picture only the wording on the back is different. After the book came out I hired a young college student to handout the postcard downtown at lunchtime on a day when the weather was nice and more workers outside. Wishing you success in your book sales!
