If you're a published author, you've probably been asked a gazillion times, "What's your book about?" Usually, I'm pretty good about refraining from the flip, "Oh, about 300 pages."
Usually.
The short answer is, "'Fast Track' is about a young woman trying to figure out what to do with her life."
Often, the person I'm talking to rolls her eyes and says, "Sounds like the story of my life."
But, of course, mystery/suspense has more twists and turns than real life.
Or does it?
"Fast Track" begins when my heroine, Lark Chadwick, discovers the body of the aunt who raised her from infancy after Lark's parents were killed in a car accident. That trauma launches Lark on a search to find out more about her past.
She goes to the small Wisconsin town where the accident happened, gets a newspaper clipping, and is astonished to learn that her parents died in a car-train collision and that Lark is the "miracle baby" who survived the crash.
But why didn't anyone ever tell her? What didn't they want her to know?
She convinces Lionel Stone, the irascible editor of the weekly newspaper, to let her do a follow-up story. Two of her sources are the mayor and sheriff, they're running against each other for Congress, the election is one week away, and each guy has a secret that will unravel Lark's investigation.
