We fight the battles, Karma wins the war

I was born with a keen sense of justice. I don't know why but nothing makes me angrier than injustice. It doesn't have to be a personal injustice, any injustice angers me. I wonder why unjust treatment seems to follow some people through life, as though they are wearing the proverbial sign on their back, "Kick Me." When gross injustice prevails for what seems like forever I try to find consolation in knowing Karma is real, though she is often exasperatingly slow.

I found out early in life that you can destroy little particles of injustice but the whole principal of it is something that has been with mankind from the beginning and will be until the end. We can fight injustice and our little battles can make a difference but we will never win the war.

Have you ever watched a TV program called, "What Would You Do?" It's a true revelation of the diversity of human reaction to injustice. I saw an episode this week of three obnoxious teenagers verbally abusing a homeless man, (all actors.) They were trying to make him do demeaning, dehumanizing things to earn the dollar they were dangling in front of him. It happened right on the corner of a public street where everybody passing by couldn't help but see it. Some people called over their shoulder as they passed for the kids to leave the old man alone. Others just passed and ignored the scene. A few stopped and tried to end it. There was one lady who was incensed and gave those kids the tongue lashing of a lifetime before she put money into the homeless man's jar. It was a true cross section of how injustice is handled in this world.

I once saw an interview of a German man, a member of a Christian church. The church was situated next to a railroad stop where rail-car loads of Jews were being shipped to the concentration camps. He said that inside the church they could hear the sobs and pitiful cries for help. When the interviewer asked the man what did the people inside the church do, he replied, "We sang louder."

I think sometimes we are all too busy with our own lives, our own dramas, to be concerned enough about the injustices we encounter around us. Maybe we don't want to get involved, maybe we are already spread too thin, maybe we don't have enough compassion in our hearts. We do have choices. We can decide to destroy the little particles of injustice that are within our power to attack....or we can just sing a little louder.
