Some simple thoughts paraphrased from my on-going studies.
The idea that life evolved, as evolutionists claim, should be the laughable position. But some Creationists insistence that Earth and Man came on the scene together have the evolutionists laughing at Christians instead. As to how to answer the questions of scoffers: I would say that [neither] Scientists, nor Theologians have all the answers to questions about our origins. The issue confronting us though, is not about our origin; it’s about our destiny, and the alternatives are clear. It’s either believe the Most High God of the Bible or don’t. Simple!

Since we will never know from experience that we made the right choice until it’s too late; believing God is the only logical thing to do. If believing Him is wrong, we’ll simply get the destiny that was always intended for us; no harm, no foul. But if we’re right, we’ll be blessed beyond measure. (1st Corinthians 2:9) However, for unbelievers, it’s just the opposite. If they’re right, they’ll get the destiny always intended for them. But if they’re wrong, they’ll be separated from the Most High Creator forever. It’s a no-brainer. Rest assured in this:

Islam’s Straight Path (Allah) –
Christianity’s Narrow Path (Christ Jesus) –
Hinduism’s Path of Infinite Manifestations of God –
New Age Spirituality’s Path of Personal Power and Divinity –
Judaism’s belief in one God, and the Torah, and its commands –
Buddhism’s Path of Enlightenment (where no god or gods exist) –
all these paths will most certainly lead to their decreed destination.

as for your poem, my hubby always said there are many religions because there are many different types of people in the world. If one path doesn't take you there the other will, God is love.

The Jews went further in requiring a savior, or messiah. I learned recently that they were common in the time of Pontius Pilate. He had over 300 of them crucified. I guess that declaring oneself a messiah was a way that someone could gather followers, similar to politicians today. The problem was, messiahs fomented revolt and the Romans would have nothing of that from the Jews.
Evolution, clearly described by Darwin and proved many times over, has become a part of mainstream science and should be taught in schools as part of science and not religion. Most Christians today seem to have the kind of compromise that you describe of believing in evolution and still maintaining a strong desire to be religious and believe that destiny will favor Christians over all others.
As result, I find that idea of "hedging one's bets," by loyally and outwardly describing oneself as a Christian somehow will save the wearer in the ever more distant chance that the ancient scripture is true amounts to a huge waste of time and energy. It begins with people not going to church and ends with all of the religious rigmarole required by government and other entities being gradually dismantled for violating freedom of religion and speech.
