A writer's contest for short story writers Let's try a contest. I'll give you three opening sentences and a title. You select an opening sentence and title, and then write a 1500 word short story. Remember, Halloween is upon us October 31 and the ghouls will be out doing their best to ruin your candy scrimmages to the front door. End of the contest is October 31, 2004 at 12 midnight! Get your submissions in to lillian.authorsden.com where Ms. MacLeod will judge the entries, so make sure all words are thoroughly spelled, check grammar, and get your story under 1,500 words.
1. Daylight pierced the purplish clouds streaking through the sky.

2. The horned ram ran along the ravine's bottom until he locked horns with a metal chain hanging from the rotted mill's door that in past years had ground the grain. Crash of the Mountain Den.
3. The robber smashed through the bank's window and fell head over heels at the feet of Inspector Doubledealing. The Rise and Fall of Petty Larceny.
