Happy Holidays or Merry Christmas? 12/11/2014 10:29:41 AM
Which holiday greeting do you choose to say this time of year? Are you easily offended?
Our society has become too easily offended by words and phrases that years ago were used frequently and without criticism. Instead of respecting and learning from the diversity that our country enjoys, why do some feel the need to tear down another person's belief system if it doesn't match theirs?
Embracing the differences in holiday customs, greetings and traditions opens the mind to a peaceful existence and a learning experience that could be thoroughly enjoyed and shared! I've been exposed to beautiful Christmas traditions that I may not have previously thought to enjoy...until I opened my mind's eye to humanity and the various forms of expression that keeps us diverse but still connected in this world.
As a Christian, I can easily say, "Merry Christmas" without thinking that I am offending someone. In turn, if someone chooses to respond with "Happy Holidays" or "Season's Greetings", why should I be ready to attack? It just doesn't make sense!
Christmas is the time of year where good things are supposed to happen...where giving is the main theme...where peace and happiness are felt and shared...where families and friends gather, wrapped in ribbons and laughter...where children dream of sugarplums and Santa Claus. Why should we let words spoil the joy of the season?
I celebrate Christmas as the birth of God's son, Jesus, but I know that there are many who don't see it that way. I can still keep my belief system, offer my greeting with a smile and accept theirs, respecting the differences. These are words that we're talking about, people! Words!
The reason for the season is inside the heart of a person, and the words used to express joy and giving shouldn't take that joy away!
So, Merry Christmas everyone and I hope that your holidays are happy!
