Why Do You Read Why do you read was a question on a survey I took. State three reasons, they asked, why you read?
I noted that I read to escape, refresh, and to learn about subjects, people and times in history. For instance, although I remember briefly learning of Phillis Wheatley in school, there were new things I found out about her with further reading.
Of course we know that she was captured as a child by slave traders, and brought in chains on a ship to Boston. There, kindly people took her in as a companion, maid, etc. The older daughter in the family educated Phillis and taught her English, the classics, geography, Latin, and the Bible. Phillis wrote her first poem when she was fourteen.
Why did she read, and write? Gifted with pen and a product of her times, it's not hard to imagine why. The survey I took wanted to know why people read, in order for the organization to sell books and create venues.
Except a book is so much more than a story that sells. A book is about people's lives and times. Mostly though, books are created by events in an author's life, filtered and sifted into something that wasn't there before.
No matter how many times a subject has been written, it's still your story. Told from your perspective and in your own words. And really, if you don't read you can't learn how to write.
