Birding in the Era of Donald Trump
10/10/2026 1:36:29 PM

How a group of bird watchers handle the delicate issue of politics while appreciating the bird migration.
Every Sunday and Wednesday morning the Bird Club gathers to see what new birds have come in from the high winds and violent storms of the changing season. It's migration time. Spring: the birds go north. Autumn: the birds go south.

We move around the boardwalk, along the trails, into the woods, across the fields and through the groves of crab apple and hawthorn trees. Looking for birds, talking about birds and the weather.

But it is a challenging time. The people on the boardwalk are all very different. Some are in mobility devices, some are elderly having trouble remembering the birds'names. Some are focused more on their cameras than on the birds.

Married, single, gay, straight, bi and transgender. Republican, Democrat, Socialist, Christian, Muslim or Jew. Keep the talk focused on birds and birding--don't slip into any other topic, don't get to know people different from yourself. Just learn about the birds and marvel at how they can travel the world.
