Author Jaimie Hope's take on reviews. I just noticed a short while ago that I had recieved my first negative review on Amazon.com for my Paranormal Romance, When You Come Back To Me Again. At frist I was crushed, but as I re-read the brief review I began wishing I could respond to this person. Since I can't do that I figured I would post my response here.
My novel is a Young Adult novel, and therefore it is devoid of foul language and other juicy details you might find in an adult novel. This is also the reason it is written as if it could have been written by a high school student, they are my target audience. I have been told by adults that they enjoy it as well, but all adults, like all young adults, or children aren't created equal.
When You Come Back To Me Again is a chapter book. It isn't as long as an actual novel, though the printed version is 136 pages long. The reason for this is simple. I remember what it was like to be a teenage reader. Although I loved to read I didn't have a lot of time for it, and unfortunately, still don't. I remember picking out books based more on their thickness than their content. Besides, why fill pages of empty dialogue, senseless side plots, etc. when you can tell a solid story in a shorter page count? Is filler and fluff to pad a book now not only acceptable, but expected? I sure hope not, I wouldn't want to live in that kind of world. What say you?
