The idea for my new novel Stolen Light originated with asking myself one question: How does a people survive centuries of darkness. From the Spanish Inquisition to Hitler’s Germany, the Jewish story is one of unimaginable suffering — and unimaginable resilience. That’s where Stolen Light began. I imagined a rabbi in the Inquisition forging a golden menorah… and sealing a prophecy inside one of its candle shafts. A message meant for Jews who would suffer again, four hundred years later. What happens when that prophecy is uncovered in Brooklyn, NY. That question became the heartbeat of my novel. Not being Jewish myself but having grown up in a diverse neighborhood in Yonkers, New York, I had many Jewish friends from whom I learned many of the culture's customs. I attended weddings, Bar Mizpah's, and birthdays that helped me understand the nuances of the religious and secular life of being a Jew. The result was a story that stretched from Brody, Poland to Freiburg, Germany, to Brooklyn NY. That one question became the heartbeat of my novel.
