What I have been doing with myself this week I have had a curious week this week.
Blame Charlie the barkeeper. Charlie, of course, is the character from my poem " barkeeper". Trying to meet the challenge that I set there prose, I took a character from the fantasy complex that I have been working on for some decades and set him to telling the part of the back story from his perspective. The next thing I know I am starting to write a novel.
So what's so curious about that. Everybody on AD has a novel in process.
That's true I suspect. And I have composed if not written dozens. there are fragments of at least six novels around here based on this complex. well now there are seven.
What is new is that for the first time in half a dozen years I am actually trying to write the story down.
At first the writing was very difficult. The words were quite leaden and the characters wooden, but, as I have worked at it is becoming easier. Easier to write and maybe even better written. Its early days and I have maybe five thousand words, so is a long haul still.
It has been this reawakening of a long neglected skill that had been both curious and fascinating. To watch new characters appear and discover their personalities and peculiarities ; to watch the action develop to write scenes that I had not preplanned but which were obviously necessary; discard scenes that were not necessary. Most interesting.
Will I finish this? I don't know. My track record is not good. And we shall see how much time I have to devote to the project. It's a start. As I said the process is fascinating.
