As the Conservative conference draws to a close and everyone is buzzing about how brilliant 'call-me-Dave' Cameron's speech was (and without a script no less!) there is growing speculation about whether Gordon Brown will now call a snap general election this October (2007). I dare say we will find out in a few days time.
The Conservatives would have us believe that they offer a real alternative to Labour's failed policies. And yet I cannot help but recollect how ten years of Labour's stealth taxes and targets was preceded by seventeen years of Conservative Union bashing, privatisation sell offs, wasting North Sea oil and sleaze. When 'call-me-Dave' said it was time for change, I felt a little dread at what would happen if we simply lurched (as we are prone to do from time to time) from the bad that we know to the worse that we didn't realise at the time.
Just in case you don't live in the UK and wonder what the hell I am talking about, this is a preamble towards offering the people of the United Kingdom the chance to see what could happen if there was a real voting system where your vote not only counted but you were virtually guaranteed representation by the political party of your choice.
I believe that Dave Cameron's 'time for change' cry is right - but not by the same electoral system that turns so many people away from polling stations because under our 'First Past the Post' system their vote is wasted and is not represented at Parliament by the political persuasion of their choice. The Liberal Democrats have called frequently for a form of Proportional Representation and the Electoral Reform Society have campaigned for years to get their favoured system adopted. In 2006 I posted my idea to them and it was met with a deafening silence. I can only conclude that they realise my system of Proportional Representation is better than theirs.
So if you want to remain disenfranchised with politics and stay without a voice at general elections you need look no further. no one can force you to vote. But if you want to find out how 99.6% of voters can have their first choice represented in Parliament by an MP of their political persuasion, I would like you to peruse my web site, http://www.shaneward.co.uk and look in 'Political Solutions'. Personally I think it would revolutionise the way politicians behave because my system emphasises the power of the voter and not the politician.
