Submissions and Political Correctness Woes 7/3/2003 2:05:30 PM
A busy day, eventually. My throat's clearing up. Can speak above a croak, but will still be subvocal tomorrow, I expect. My wife's trying to coax me to take the day off and go see Arnie in Terminator 3. Her treat. Tough choice.
Just filled out my application to this year's upcoming Atlantic Fringe Festival. Nine nights of fun filled performance art. Will be putting on another storytelling presentation. Calling it WILD WORDS. Trying to figure ways to make it a little bigger than last year's. Always a little nerve racking, but my nervousness is mostly a pose. I can do this standing on my head.
Next month I'm putting on a talk on tarot and palmistry at two local librarys. The vigilant holier than thou folk are already sending letters of protest to the library board. I don't get it. I go to church too. Just because I'm practising something some folks are scared of, they have to raise a fuss. The library had planned to make this a costumed event. Best dressed gypsy wins a free palm reading. I figured that'd be good for a laugh. Only now some politically correct citizens have written in (to the mayor, no less), and complained that I am a bigot for allowing this racial degradation to go on. Guess they haven't heard that the local Rom community hire me once a year for their annual gipsy party. If the Romani think I'm good enough to represent their culture, what problem do these uptight civic minded folk have with me?
Oh well. The library says they've run into this sort of protest before, and aren't worried. I'll proceed full speed ahead. I'm used to it to. A week doesn't go by down on the waterfront when I have some upstanding Christian asking me why I'm reading palms instead of the Bible. That's how wars start, you know. Folks taking religion way too seriously. Live and let live, I say. God did give us free choice, didn't he?
