The Christmas Cat Who Brought Healing for the New Year 1/6/2017 10:03:49 PM
A kitten mysteriously shows up on a stone pillar at our gate on Christmas eve. My friend Kate (not her real name) had been suffering from severe depression for almost five years. She had lost her husband and her German Shepherd just months apart. This was too much for her sensitive nature. She could not sleep or eat much and for that time psychiatrists gave her all sorts of medications. They lined the window sill behind her kitchen sink. She could barely force herself to her work as an accountant.
I remember that night just before Christmas. My husband had left in the evening to get a hair cut. He came back in just a few minutes. I saw him coming toward me down the hall from the living room carrying something. All I could see in the light behind him was two ears sticking up. Then he placed in my hands a dirty, smelly, half-frozen kitten.
Immediately I took him to the bathroom sink to wash him with warm water. He turned out to be a she and beautiful striped markings appeared. I wrapped the tiny creature in a towel and sat in a rocking chair with it clinging to my shoulder. After awhile we put her to sleep in a bed away from my cat.
My husband, Walt, had found her almost frozen on one of the rock wall posts at the entrance to our country lane. We didn't know if she would live, but the next day was Christmas eve and she was looking good.
We decided to take her to Kate hoping she would take pity on the kitten. She took it on trial, she said. But it didn't take long before she bonded with "Tiger." As the months went by we saw a significant change in Kate.
She was learning to pray again and do things. After one prayer session, she told us something special happened. She looked at her hands and saw how wonderfully-made they were, and suddenly she was thankful and praised God. Soon she was going out again and seeing people and her medication came down to only one pill.
Three years later, Kate is completely well and Tiger is a grown cat. They went through some tough times with adolescent furniture scratching, etc. but no furniture is worth the happiness this Christmas cat brought to Kate.
