Why I told my story Well, here goes. My first blog. I never thought I would ever keep a blog because it feels like I'm writing in my diary for everyone to read. Of course, I'm going to have to get used to opening up more because I'm about to publish a memoir. So who am I and why do I feel like my blog is going to be interesting? Well, my B.A. is in Journalism and my dream was to either be a news anchor or a columnist with the Detroit Free Press. Of course, both of those careers take time and I really didn't like having to move back in with my parents after I graduated; therefore, I took the first job I could land. I know, I gave up my dream for an apartment. I was 22. (Oh the irony of living with my parents at the age of 35.)
The bottom line is that I love to write. I am inspired by authors across many different genres, but memoirs draw me in the most. I love to lose myself in the author's story and often shake my head in wonder at the adversity of what people face. For the past three years, I kept a journal/log of my experiences but I never felt comfortable sharing any of it…until now.
Once I started writing my book, I found the experience to be the best form of therapy I could ever imagine. There were days I definitely had to step away from the computer and cry. There were days when I could feel my anxiety start to consume me because I was taken back to a place I had buried in my mind so long ago. There were days I didn't think I would have the strength to finish my book.
For a while, the anxiety retreated when Black Opal Books took a chance on me and my story and offered me a contract. Writing a book is hard enough but trying to find someone who believes in your book enough to sell it? Only 1% of people who send in proposals are asked to publish. So after 23 rejection letters, I became one of the lucky 1%. Part of my contract, however, was to create a author website and a blog. I wanted to keep my book a secret as long as I could because I was scared of my ex finding out.
But you know what? I finally realized that as long as I held on to that fear, he still controlled a little part of me and that was unacceptable. So yesterday, I launched my author website and today I begin my blog. Why? Because it's my story to tell, not his. I lived the nightmare and I had the strength to find my way out. Even though my life right now may not be what I had envisioned, I know I am the happiest I have been in a really long time.
I hope that you look forward to my memoir, Who Am I?, slated to be released mid-2014. In the meantime, thank you for visiting my blog, reading my ramblings and please feel free to leave a comment.
