Security guards are employed to keep the workplace safe from external dangers and to maintain order among people. These security guards perform their job diligently because they’re been paid to do so. But who cares about their own safety?
The shooting of a security guard who worked for the Canadian National Railroad in 2016 confirms that security men are also vulnerable to attacks like the ordinary men on the streets. They’re no robots; they also have blood running through their veins.
While it is true that security companies have well-trained officers, this does not preclude them from being exposed to danger too. Therefore in the midst of trying to provide protection for others, security guards must also seek protection for themselves.
Here are few safety tips that could be of help to members of your company’s security team.
Understand your environment
Part of the attribute of smartness for security guards includes understanding the environment in which they operate. As trained security personnel, you must be able to analyse the security condition of your environment.
Are there high-risk areas around your environment? Are there any porous spots in your vicinity from where you could be attacked? Are there any obstructions on your exit route? These are some of the questions you should provide answers to.
Be strategic in your movements
It’s important to make your movements in a random pattern to avoid being easily predictable. Also, you should organize your patrols in such a way that no outsider can determine when the next one would come up.
Always be careful when moving in isolated areas as someone might be laying an ambush for you. If you’re involved in providing gate guard services, you must ensure that you maintain a certain distance when interrogating someone, as you never can tell when an attack might happen.
Lastly, you should never be a lone ranger. Always endeavour to walk in groups especially in dark and isolated areas.
Use defensive gears
Wearing your defensive gears is a simple safety precaution, yet many security guards don’t take it seriously. You might not see yourself sustaining any physical injuries, but you simply can’t write off the dangers of stepping on sharp objects.
Remember that you’d not be able to perform optimally if you sustain a slight injury and this might cause a loophole in the line of defence. In light of this, you must always wear your safety shoes (boots actually) and always wear your body armour (to guard against knife cuts and the impact of bullets).
Work with good equipment
In reality, security guards can only do little when it comes to providing security. They need to have access to modern safety equipment to perform their duties effectively. Failure to do so will not expose the organization to security threats; it will also put the security officers at a high risk.
Essentially, a standard security agency must provide facilities such as the CCTV cameras, alarms, radios, bullet-proof vests, mobile phones, and patrol vehicles. In addition, there must be easy access to first aid equipment in case of any eventuality.
