How outrageous can you be? Writers of fiction face a difficult balance. Apart from works of fantasy, you need to keep some foothold in the real word, on the other hand too much reality can be tedious.
These thoughts are triggered by the current political shenanigans on either side of the Atlantic: In Britain the never-ending Brexit saga, In America the equally never-ending Trump circus. Would a fiction writer have been brave enough to publish such outlandish plots?
Well, yes, because Michael Dobbs did just that with 'House of cards', which created a criminal British prime minister, then used the same formula with an American president. Huge successes with Outrageous plots. My political thriller 'Night Watchman', set in London, is not quite so outrageous. Should I have been braver?
