Nobel nonsense The Nobel committee has just made its annual literature award to the usual howls of disbelief. Without going into the merits of this case, it’s a reminder that any work of art is a matter of taste. And that acceptance by a wider public is often a matter of chance. Authors who now are household names often had to endure dozens of rejections before finally seeing their name in print. At the other end of the spectrum, one columnist recently wondered how many people have actually read some of the so-called masterpieces; conclusion, very few.
As we scribble away we have to realise that Lady Luck plays a large part in what the world calls ‘success’, the words ‘good’ and ‘bad’ being slippery customers. At least in this digital age it’s possible to arrange for our personal masterpieces be published at a bearable cost. And then personally try to ensure that that at least some folk read them.
