Too Much Information 6/17/2024 4:48:00 PM
We are too bombarded by the media today. Have you heard the saying TMI? We know that stands for too much information. However, we live in a culture that screams noise. First, we have our radios, then our television sets, our PCs, iPads, smartphones, and iPods. Wait! There is more!
How often, and for how long do we spend listening to other people talk, sing, report the news, etc.? Ask yourself when was the last time you just sat in quiet? Silence and solitude are a thing of the past.
I grew up in a small town that for some would say was too noisy at night to sleep in. Country folks would say it was too noisy. Would you believe that when I moved to the country at the age of 29, I had trouble with the quiet? The noise of a fire whistle, trains going by, and tires squealing or car engines revving was what I was conditioned to. I slept with the noise. The quiet was too loud.
Since there was no turning back I had to get used to the quiet. It is not all that bad. When I started to think that the quiet was too much, I thank God our great country is not under attack by foreign enemies. Then the quiet nights are not so bad after all.
As far as information is concerned, our people have way too many devices and ways of communication. Yet, why are people so lonely? The art of a simple one-on-one conversation is a thing of the past. Which, I think, is sad. We are bombarded by noise and info everywhere you go. Now I am not saying that any internet use is wrong. The Internet has its place. But we can have too much of a good thing. School-age children don't do research in books but instead on websites. They “ “ask Siri” instead of librarians, teachers, or parents. We must be a sad lot if we think we need so much from the Internet. Laziness has become more of the norm anymore.
What is the cure for the madness? Well, we could encourage reading. Our imagination can take us to places we've never seen or been to before. Imagining people, places and things is another past activity that could be reintroduced.
Parents could take their children on outdoor adventures in the backyard. If they had no backyard, then going to a local park would work. The great outdoors is still great but let's make it even better. Go outside!
