Old Age
3/22/2005 10:04:54 PM

Thoughts on old age from someone who is there.

Most people, usually people who are getting old, talk about the symptons that accompany aging. I feel like telling them: It's the energy, stupid! It's the rapid decline in energy that is reponsible for the decline in everthing else.

One of the interesting aspects of getting old is how time and space shrink. The time of Christ seems like only yesterday, and this planet of ours is just a speck of dust in a universe so large (billions of stars in billions of galaxies)that we can't even comprehend it.

As an old person, I live in a time/energy continuum. People who are energetic can talk about finding the time to do something; people who are old have to find the energy. But they seem equivalent. I can't find the time to do many things because I can't find the energy. When I can find the energy, I will be able to find the time.
Old age is a preparation for death, a way of making us willing to let go. And I have been aging rapidly this year, ever since hitting 81 last October.

Stay tuned for more thoughts from this side of the grave.
