Another back in the day story
5/19/2005 10:38:19 AM

Back around 1989 I was at work and one of my friends and co-worker (who happened at that time to be the president of Cops For Christ) was doing his daily lunch break thing of talkingto the prisoners we had in the holding cells. He was one of those people that you believe is incapable of doing wrong. He still is. Anyway.. he never discussed
whatever it was they were locked up for. He'd start a conversation about their beliefs. Did they believe in a greater power.? If not why and if so he'd continue in that vein. Anyway. He had a really interactive conversation going with about 6 guys back there and this one prisoner who was about 6 ft tal 300 pounds. Big Dude started yelling and cussing at my friend. He cussed at the other prisoners. My
friend kept the other prisoners calm ( so therewould not be any fight breaking out) But the Big Dude just kept yelling at them. Specifically telling my friend that there is no God. I witnessed this verbal barage literally drain my friend to a point where I thought he wanted to (but
did not) cry.

Fast forward a few weeks later
I get a call (on the radio) to respond to shots fired. I enter the project building 24 stories high and go up the windowless stairs until I find the victim.

Now I should explain that some of the most lethal wounds do not bleed much and some of the least life threatening can be very bloody . I check for the shooter, call for a back up (in case the shooter returns) And protect the victim while awaiting the ambulance I called for. Blood is all over the floor. The Bid Dude (yes the same) is writhing on the floor screaming at the top of his lung "Ohh Lord! Please Help Me" Oh My God Please Stop This Pain" " Lord Jesus please protect me!"

He could barely hear me over his own yelling. Now... I had a
reputation (I had many) for being compassionate even with some pretty unsavory people. But when I realized who this was and what he was saying a huge grin fitted over my face and nothing I did would erase it. The EMS got there and informed us that the wound was from the exterior of on butt cheek, throughh it continued into the second butt cheek and had exited his body. Now on some poele that might have been
a problem but since each one of his cheeks was twice the size of mine he had plenty of clearance and it was quickly determined that nothing vital had been hit.He would be in alot of pain for a long time but nothing he wouldn't recover from.

The Sergeant came with his driver and I had to keep excusing myself to step into the stairwell so I could laugh. I know it was wrong and it wa also unprofessional but I could not stop. The harder I tried to stop the more I laughed. The Sgt and his driver was shocked that I would do such a thing.

As the loaded this guy into the anbulance. I asked him.
When did you start believeing in God?
He said
When the bullet left the gun.

I made a point of telling my friend . A few months later the Big Dude came to our command to have a long talk with my friend.

End of story
Val
