Guess who just became a Girl Scout Troop Leader! To anyone that has ever really known me, it will come as a complete shock that I am now a Girl Scout Troop Leader. Not only that, but, the fact that I will be working with 8 - 11 year old girls. Whew!!
It was a point on contention with my mother , that I was the sole female for a few generations , that was not a Girl Scout. I wanted to either be a Camp Fire Girl or a Boy Scout.
Why you may ask?
Because my two elder sisters came home with doilies, knitted pieces, crotchet and other "girlie" stuff, that frankly made me nauous, I wanted to play basketball, football, drum, bongo and be the tom boy I was .
I was a den mother as a late teen and early twenty something. I was a Post Advisor twice in NYC. It was through The Boy Scouts' Exploring program. I did it on my own time first. I created a new post, then was asked to take over a largely defunct post that truly was just a bunch of kids' name on paper. I then turned that into the largest post in NYC.
I loved it. I still miss most of the youth I worked with.
But the Exploring Program is the only co-ed branch of the Boy Scouts- for youth 14 - 20..
The idea of hanging out with a solely female group hads never appealed to me.
But my daughter had paid membership in our (presently) local council prior to moving from NYC. We have not been able to find a troop since we arrived. So, when her school advertised that they were having the Girl Scouts at her school we were both very happy.
However, we were quickly informed that she, like three other young ladies, would have to travel quite some distance away to find a troop. Further, no tropps had room for all four to at leat be able to stay together.
SO, I agreed to run the troop.
I have wondered why on earth after well over a decade of being in the woods with the Army , I would now be required to go to training to learn what I can teach. Hardly any of the numerous training class are in our area. yet, each day I wake with a sense of resolve that not only will I do this the way it should be. But, I am realizing that Girl Scouting has evolved into something I can really enjoy myself.
I just wanted to share this I hope that if there are any adults out there with free time (NO pedophiles) please donate your time to tomorrows women. The world we all live in depend on it. They will likely be our future leaders.
And as the mothers of the next generation, it is immperative.
Also on Saturday Oct. 22,2005 we are participating in a food drive for the Katrina Victims
People ae asked to pack grocery bags with non perishable goods and leave it on their door step. The Girl Scouts will collect and sort the goods which will be shipped to the people it is meant for.
I know this has nothing to do with my book or writing. But, I just am proud. This Saturday we are having our first meeting
