This is too much... a .. open mic 7/27/2005 11:10:04 AM
The begining of my love for the spoken word, and why I write ... Mom was always said that I have never met a stranger, and that even as a kid I wanted to hang out with the adults, and she said she could tell "I was listening", and she was right , I was ... I think even then I loved the spoken word, the concept of being able to communicate and do it well was fasinating to me, I noticed the faces, the reactions, and the responses of people as they talked, it was a rush for me when they were on the "same page", when they "got" it, and I was mystified but acknowledged the fact that there was a series of unique unspoken rules among speakers as well, I picked up on the fact that, sometimes the same story was told by the same person, again, and again, but it was treated as if it was the first time it was heard, when it was told again, and again. There always seemed to be laughter and gasp at the same "insert laughter here", pauses.and of course the punchline was always the cu'de gra and was well recieved by all. Some people were held in higher esteem than others, and held the floor longer, and more often, or was yealded the floor by merely walking into the room! Others had to wait and be interupted, and told that the things they were saying was old news, or even worse they were interupted and their statements were, thrown back at them, and the story and what they were saying was "fast forwarded" ... in a "we know ,we know we've heard it all before" kind of reaction' I felt sorry for them, and I wondered why this was the case? I noticed sometimes he "non" speakers station in life was precieved to be less than what it may have been , or they didn't dress or present themselves as well or that the person by default or family name were from a questiontable bacground or then again maybe none of the above applied, it was just a fact, for some unsaid reason, but the sad part was I could see and it was evident in the demeanor of such a person who recieved such treatment, that it hurt them. And in turn it embarassed me and I felt their pain.
Funny stories were the best, everybody felt good when a funny story or incident was told and that always got the best reaction.
Then as I got older and was introduced to litrature in school and authors/writers, TV, monthly periodicals, and as my eyes was opened and I begain to see the world around me ... I of course noticed women and how differnt they were from guys and also how they communicated differently than guys would ......( more to come )
