Schools: A harbor for violence and threats? 5/1/2007 6:21:35 PM
Well, I heard today that Delaware County Community College in Pennsylvania will be open for classes again tomorrow. This is taking place after the school was shut down for several days so they could deal with threats made against the campus.
Wow. It seems like there are constantly acts of violence being committed in schools around the country. Most recently, was the tragic incident that occured at Virginia Tech. Whether it is just media hype or a true trend it seems like violence and threats in school is increasing. Before these acts were seen only in k-12 schools but now these acts are entering our college campuses.
What are we going to do? How can we put a stop to this? As an educator and a parent, I fear what the future of education holds. I fear what kinds of things will be happening in our schools in the future.
The saddest thing is a vast majority of students want nothing more than to go to school in a safe place where they do not have to fear threats of violence. The problem is: How do we give them this? Schools in essence are a microcosm of society. As our society becomes more violent, it only stands to reason that our schools will too. This is evident in the fact that acts of violence are now creeping into college.
Hopefully, our society will have a shift in values and people will learn to act and behave more peacefully.
