Some thoughts on my being read by Brian Ames, author of three collections of published short stories and somebody I respect as a writer. I finally got an author to look over some of my work and tell me if he thinks I can get a publisher to promote it. Of course, we're not talking Random House or Penguin (have these been gobbled up by some gigantic bird of prey publisher?); I just want to have chance to see my stuff inside a professionally done cover.
It's funny, but when I told Brian I really like the title of his volume "Eighty-Sixed" because I am a recovered alkie, he noted on his email reply that he was one also! That makes me believe we might even have more simpatico. I'm also looking forward to discussing the likes of guys like James Frey who make it lousy for "program people." True, we writers are a renegade lot, but there are so few non-whores left in the trade, we have to stick together!
Brian will be on a bass fishing trip for five days, and I have to wait until he returns. I'll try to stay busy (I'm working on a story for a contest at Fish Publishing in Ireland), but this stuff will be in the back of my mind.
