Celebrating a birthday calls for a new book 2/2/2007 2:19:59 PM
Turning 71 finds me rewriting my first novel Started a new book this new year. A fitting thing. Actually, it's not exactly a new book. It's an old book retrofitted into a new premise because the subject is dated, but being relived by thousands of our boys fighting in Iraq and the women who love them.
My original book dealt with a woman and a Vietnam Vet suffering from Post Traumatic Stress. It was almost published, almost optioned for the movies, and after one thing and another, it grew older and no one cared anymore.
Then I attended a conference and was on a panel. We were asked to discuss books we'd written that were never published, and when I told about it everyone said how they wished they could read it.
After the panel concluded a young woman approached me and said, "I have an idea how you could bring your book up to date and give it a second chance at being published."
Of course my ears perked. Never turn down a suggestion. She said, "Give your protagonist a granddaughter who is going through the same thing with a man who has returned from Iraq and interweave the two stories."
So, thank you to that fan, whose name I wish I had written down, because turning 71 has caused my hard drive to malfunction and spew out loads of information to make room for more.
The book is racing along. Thankfully, I was able to get a guru who could download the old WordStar file created on a long ago computer and saved to a floppy, and make it eligible for my Word Perfect program to read. I am busy as can be with this book.
Since I've been in a publishing lull, I have plenty of books still making the rounds, so I'm able to concentrate on putting this one together, at least for the time being. And it is working better than I ever thought it would.
When asked why I still attend conferences and workshops after having written and published so many books, I reply, "If you pay attention, you can always learn something new, and one thing that helps with my writing is worth the entire conference."
Watch for my latest book, Fly With The Mourning Dove. No, I don't have a release date yet. Still waiting for the cover art to be finished, but it should be soon, now that the holidays are out of the way.
Name of the book I'm working on? Beyond The Moon. I'm keeping the old title, at least for the time being.
