New Year's Day and the septic tank's full 1/2/2007 7:27:18 AM
Okay, it's January the Firstest, 2007, and what better day to begin a blog? I'm going to post irregularly on what's happening to me in the world of literature and also what's shakin' down on the farm. I'll copy these rants to both my Author's Den site and MySpace.
I was especially pleased when I got the e-mail requesting use of my story, "Going Native," for inclusion in an anthology that will be used as a textbook for Gothic and Horror Literature. The reason why is was so special? My writer's group put that story down big time. The main reason they didn't like it was that I went for bizarre sex. They agreed it was bizarre, but they also thought it to be outrageously funny, which some members displayed in a not-so-nice manner. Okay, I DID drop the more outlandish imagery, but still. . .
And my latest nomination for the James Award also came as a surprise. I'd not had time to submit many stories or poems last year, but editor Cathy Buburuz liked my article equating the process of becoming a published writer with the pursuit of sex. Darn, there's that S-E-X word again. So why is my writer's group so convinced that sex is all I think about? Well. . . I do happen to be submitting chapters of my new paranormal romance novel, "A Reversal of Fortunes," and the main theme of the story is that the two lovers have each had their minds put in the other's body, so they have to make love to themselves, so to speak. And then there's the giant with a club-sized penis. But still. . .
The reason I've finally found a little time to blog is that I'm home waiting for the truck to come and pump out our septic tank. Of course it had to go bad on New Year's day!
My New Year's Resolutions: I'm commiting myself to finishing 3 novels this year, and to submit at least 10 short stories. That sounds like a lot, but I have one novel that's 2/3 of the way done and the others have a chapter or two written. I also resolve to hound my agent into letting me know what's going on more often. She has two novels and 2 kid's poems that were written for an illustrated children's book.
Okay, time's up. I have to go pull the temporary sump pump out of the septic tanks, so it'll be ready to go when the sewage-sucking truck shows up.
