I was raised Catholic and I had issues with this religion as far back as I can remember. It wasn’t until my late thirties however, that my true awakening started and I began to see not only Catholicism, but Christianity in general, in a new light. What I discovered shocked me. I knew then I could never place doctrine and theocracy over logic and common sense ever again. At the end of the classic SciFi film, Planet of the Apes, Taylor (Charlton Heston) sets out on a quest for the answer to how apes evolved from men. Dr. Zaius warns him, “Don't look for it, Taylor. You may not like what you find.” This advice should be taken by anyone who has decided to be a seeker of truth. Institutional belief systems will shackle the mind and bind the spirit so long as they rule and reign unchecked, unchallenged. The reality is, many of us are accepting of such a state of mind; I am not.
