Tadpoles

Tadpoles

Barefoot I dreamwalk
lonely Longview Road
to little canal ribboned
along far side of the moon
rising slow a giant
orange glowing
illuminating field and water
creeping down furrows
irrigating sweetpotatoes
as tapestry of stars
twinkle in their melodies

little me
flops on my back
on moist sand and grass
feet dancing with a mind all their own
in cool melancholic water
and I position my eyes to the sky
into the mystery of the vast expanses
and wonder in boyish wonder;
does HE know
of this volcano
of tears ready
to explode in my soul?
could HE see anxiety in us kids’ eyes
in mom’s eyes
how was she going to make-it
dad being dead a year ?

After awhile
gazing at the stars
my thoughts suspend
and I gaze and gaze
and gaze
ears siphoning sounds of frogs
crickets and coyotes in the distance
and water parading through grasses
waiting
anticipating
hoping HE
would see and elevate us
above uninspiring circumstances
then suddenly a strong cool
breeze brushes me
and this unexplainable serenity
shrouds me
and the moon-bright sky voiceless speaks
I sit up and compelled
Whisper: Thank you,
and my weary eyes dry
and the moon and stars in unison wink
and tadpoles dance
circles around my feet

I rise run home half-way
hobble and pull out a sticker
grandma at her window sees me
calls and serves a cold slice
of sweet watermelon
asks; Why do you have sand
on your back and head?

I simply said;
Out catchin’ tadpoles
