Today Turkey continues to build up its military forces along its border with Iraq. Why are they doing this? Because our Congress got the bright idea to accuse and condemn Turkey of genocide for acts that took place during the WWI era. Congress is supposed to speak for All Americans, let me set the record straight with our Turkish friends. Congress does not speak for All Americans. I, like most of the people living in Turkey today, was not around during this time and have no desire to revisit the past. Turkey is considered a friend and an ally in the War On Terror and I for one would like to keep it that way. Insulting your friends and insinuating they are no better than Hitler, Stalin, or Pol Pot will result in your friend or ally turning into your enemy. We cannot afford more enemies.
Why is Congress under the leadership of Nancy Pelosi doing this? Pure, raw politics. In their small, anti-Bush, win the '08 election at all cost, brains they believe they can force President Bush to give in on some of the bills he has vetoed and others he is threatening to veto. They also think this will somehow make them look strong on defense and strong on civil rights. They don't understand what is at stake.
While our Diplomats are telling Turkey we will work with them and the Kurds to put an end to the Kurdish attacks in Turkey, our Congress has just told Turkey we are siding with the Kurds. Congress more or less said we don't like you because of what happened in your past and we cannot be trusted to help you in the future. Congress has also implied they will attack anyone or any Nation that helps this Administration with the War On Terror.
What will happen if Turkey decides to stop allowing us to resupply our forces in Iraq and Afghanistan using their roads and airspace? Everything going to Iraq will have to enter from the south and Afghanistan will be cut off, except through Pakistan. Convoys traveling from Kuwait to Baghdad will be longer resulting in more Al-Qaeda attacks and more American deaths. Just as Iraq seems to be settling down and Iraqis are starting to help our military restore order resulting in less American deaths, Congress steps in and does something stupid. How much longer will Americans allow this Congress to play politics will the lives of our men and women in uniform?
