A Resolution This year is going to be something different for me. I've already gone through some of the psychological range of re-thinking my life in preparation for what is to come. After all, I've worked solidly now for thirty three years, and at the end of February I'll be retiring.
I wouldn't have thought that the event would require any thought at all--just celebrations and joy and much dancing and throwing of confetti and such. But it is a change, and any big transition always seems to go more smoothly with a little thought.
This goes hand in hand with the New Year and my making a resolution(which I admit I rarely do, just because I don't want to fail at it).
There are many things I WANT to do this year: organize my closets, create a great vegetable garden, paint a little, knit, reflect, and of course write. But there are other things that transcend WANT, although that is part of it, and become NEED to do. Not in the sense that guilt is sending an "I should" coming my way, but NEED in the sense that it's something vital to my soul.
At the top of the list is, "I will connect with those I love more this year."
My sweet grown daughter, my Senior-in High School grandson, my two remarkable parents, my wonderful sister, neice, nephews, uncle, cousin and his family--many are spread out across the country, but even if they're near, it's hard to stay close with everything that goes on in our lives.
How will I do this? A call. A letter. Gatherings are worth making an effort to organize. And when I'm with someone, I'll BE with them, not distracted--which is the second resolution. Live in the moment. Really be there.
I won't be losing anything when I retire. I'll just be heading down a new road toward another adventure, and I'll be seeing my friends and family along the way.
Happy New Year to you!
