Discovering what to do after finishing a book.
It happens every time I complete a long writing project whether it's a grant application or a novel.
My approach as I near the end is always manic, type-A, 24/7. Then the project is shipped off somewhere.
AND THEN THERE'S NOTHING TO DO.
I feel like one of those people who's just retired from a fast-paced job and suddenly finds a lot of time on his hands.
In this case, two novels are "out there." I finished Garden of Heaven and it's now in the inbasket of a prospective agent. After Amazon announced it was forcing all POD publishers to use BookSurge, I decided this might be a good time to search for a mainstream publisher for The Sun Singer (iUniverse, 2004). I've never been very patient waiting for responses to queries.
And I haven't yet made the transition to another novel that's been waiting in the wings even though authors are advised to use this waiting period to write more stuff.
If anyone out there has any better ideas for using the sudden free time that shows up when a book is finished, I'm open to suggestion.
