"Tara and The Place of Irish Kings" is a recently published book about the life of Shelby County native Tara Owen. Tara died of cystic fibrosis (CF) but lived more during her 28 years than most of us will live in a lifetime.
Cystic Fibrosis is a fatal genetic respiratory and digestive disease.
Working for th Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, my first 10 years after college, I must report that it is one of the absolute worst diseases that exists.
I saw many children die and many familiies fall apart under the curse of this dreadful disease.
In 1984, when I first began working with the CF Foundation, it was virtually unhead of that any CF patient lived beyond their teenage years.
But Tara Owen-well, she was different. I remember meeting her and her mother, Gail Owen, all those years ago. Tara's mother was a driving force in Tara's life. She pushed Tara to live up to her potential and to expect a full life. As a result, she did.
