and now I wait... 5/17/2008 12:50:18 PM
It took six years to write and twenty to experience and now I wait for it in its finished form with mixed excitement and curiosity. My heart’s thoughts printed and displayed for anyone to see. What will people think after reading it? Will they like it? Did I do it justice? Will it rise to the top, sink to the bottom, or coast along some where in between? These are questions I find myself asking as I wait these next eight weeks for the pending birth of my first book into the world.
It will be my “new baby” and while I want to announce it to the world I find that as I wait there is a part of me that wants to also protect it from the world and shield it from any harsh criticisms or judgments. But once it’s in the world it’s beyond my control. I can only hope that it has been equipped well enough to stand on its own against the intense scrutiny it will entail. I hope that I will be. So I anxiously wait. But not without work…
There are press kits to create, research of target areas to contact, mailings, book reviews to inquire about and prepare for, marketing material to create, web pages, local, out-of-state, online and “offline” promotional opportunities to find and pursue… and the list continues. New to the wild ride of publishing and authorship I soar on top of a wave one day and feel caught in an under-tow on others wondering when I’ll ever get a grip on all the new responsibilities. I’ve finally come to the conclusion: I won’t. But that’s OK. I’m just going to enjoy the ride and keep my perspective. My goal has always been two parts: 1) have my book published 2) help others find hope, help, and encouragement. This is the goal that I’ll continue to keep in front of me when I feel overwhelmed, doubt my writing skills, and question my success as a writer. For me success will be in helping just one person. My dream is to reach them all. My reality should fall some place in between. In the interim I’ll go back to preparing “the nursery” as I wait for “delivery time”.
